History

The Kessler CityLofts structure charts its earliest structural documents in the Fulton County offices at 1899. Other documents suggest the building was erected in 1912. These early permits and drawings date the building as one of the oldest still standing in downtown Atlanta. The building was the site of the original Davison-Paxon. The department store was bought by Macys in the 1920s and moved uptown to the block next to the Winecoff Hotel. Then from the 1930s to the 1990s, Kessler department store occupied the building, which was part of the downtown shopping district that included Richs department store. It was reported in Jezebel magazine in 1999, that Kessler's was one of the few that opened its doors to African-Americans in a time when most did not. Today, the conversion includes six floors of condomimiums. The ground floor was developed for commercial spaces.

Architecture

The exterior facades are built with recently (2005) rennovated red brick and large windows that give stunning views of midtown to the northeast and downtown to the southwest. Most of the residents enjoy classical Doric columns, original maple and walnut floors and 16 1/2" ceilings - true loft heights. Many of the windows are more than 100 inches tall. Much of the original interior brick is exposed to the interiors of the residential units. The residential units range from 1,000 to 2,200 square fee as one and two bedroom units.
